Introduction to overhead line and cable: overhead cable (full name: overhead insulated cable) is an overhead conductor with insulating layer and protective sheath. It is a special cable manufactured by using production process similar to cross-linked cable. It is a new transmission mode between overhead conductor and underground cable. Overhead cable is single core and can be divided into hard aluminum wire structure, hard drawn copper wire structure and aluminum structure according to their different structures Alloy wire structure, steel core or aluminum alloy core supporting structure and self supporting three core lamination structure (core can be hard aluminum or copper wire).

The overhead cable is not a kind of ordinary oil paper insulated cable or cross-linked insulated cable directly hanging on the overhead tower, but a kind of special cable which is similar to the cross-linked cable production process.

General overhead cables are single core, which can be divided into hard aluminum wire structure, hard drawn copper wire structure, aluminum alloy wire structure, steel core or aluminum alloy core support structure and self-supporting three core lamination structure (the core can be hard aluminum or hard copper wire), etc.

The structure of hard aluminum wire is light in weight, moderate in tension, easy to bend in cable, convenient in installation and low in engineering cost. It can be easily installed on existing tower and used in general reconstruction or new construction projects.

The structure of hard drawn copper wire is heavy, but its tensile force is large, and its resistance to external forces is strong. Even when the tower is broken, the cable can still be electrified. Aluminum alloy wire structure is light in weight and large in tension, which is mainly used in long span tower system with 100m span.

Steel core or aluminum alloy core support structure is generally used in 35kV voltage system with large span. Square insulating parts are used to separate the support line (bare line) and three insulated phase lines. The support line can be used as lightning conductor. Its biggest advantage is that the sag is small and the arc weight is only about 2.4% of the span.

Self supporting three core stranded structure is used in medium span system. The disadvantages of this kind of cable are: the manufacturing length of three core cable is shorter than that of single core cable, there are more joints, and there is outer semi conductive shielding layer. At the end of the cable, terminal head or stress cone structure should be installed as the common cable.
